Artist's Comments

It's not perfected but I had to stop working on it so it could dry enough to serve as a Christmas present...

(oil on canvas, started with a pencil drawing)

Nice work with the skintones and giving her face volume, I think you really pulled that one off. A thing I've noticed throughout your drawings is the eyes, they all could be more vivid and life-like. This tutorial is on drawing eyes in pencil but if you get the shading right in pencil you'll get it right in paint to. [link] If you're serious about developing your skills and an artist maybe you should do a study of eyes. (The eyebrows cold use some more individual character, hints on that can be found in the tutorial too) But I really think that she has a wonderfl expression here and t feel like she's looking out of the picture at me instead of staring into nothing. Who was the lucky person to get the painting?

My father, though I'm not sure he realised his 'luck' ;). I'll look into the tutorial, thank you.

This is pretty. She looks like Cameron from House without the black hair :P

I hear oil takes forever to dry so I bet this was a bit of a challenge. You did a wonderful job on it though. You really did a wonderful job on the expression. The shading on the face, especially the cheeks and creases from the smile give such realism and are not over powering as in some portraits therefore creating an overly exagerated and fake look. The hair is lovely too and I like the friendly eyes. I agree with ~AestheticDevil It does look as though she is looking out of the picture rather then into nothing. Beautiful job.:blackrose:

Thank you. :) Actually, when I look at it, my fingers are itching to get hold of it once more because there is much that would need improvement. But I'm still proud of it.

I was surprised myself that it was possible to use it as Christmas present although I had painted it only a few weeks before. The clolour went dry on the surface faster than usual. I've had pictures, painted with the same colours and the like, that were still completely 'wet' after three weeks, Angela on the other hand dried so fast that I sometimes had the problem that the paint that I had applied two days before wouldn't mix properly anymore with thenewly applied one... I have no idea why.
